Q. How do we grow a Biodesigner?

Abstract

This project aims to strengthen New York City's Biodesign community by promoting a collective ethos and enhancing visibility through collaboration with local institutions like BioBAT Art Space Gallery, Genspace, and Parsons School of Design. It introduces the 'Biodesign Culture System' and 'Community Needs Map' to guide the field's growth, emphasizing foundational values such as Biophilia and Sustainability. Methodologies like 'Bio-Shrine' for in-depth research and 'Biostorm' for ideation are employed to gather insights and foster innovation within the community. The 'Bio-Intertwine' kit and a public installation are developed to engage practitioners with living biomaterials, encouraging a deeper connection with nature and promoting community collaboration. This project seeks to advance Biodesign beyond anthropocentric views, fostering a sustainable and interconnected future by leveraging the field's potential for significant societal impact despite challenges like experimental delays and resource scarcity. By consolidating foundational values and fostering close practitioner-nature relationships, the project aims for sustainable field growth and enhanced Biodesign community cohesion.

Description
Biodesign, an interdisciplinary field with profound societal impact potential, advocates for a shift towards ecological imagination through engagement with nature. Despite its rapid emergence, it remains specialized in New York due to its complex nature. Our project, Bio-intertwine, is a community-driven initiative that collaborates with institutions like BioBAT Art Space Gallery, Genspace, and Parsons School of Design to delve into the core values and essentials of New York’s Biodesign community. Through tools, dialogues, workshops, and biomaterial experiments, we aim to cultivate a strong, unified identity within the NYC biodesign community, enhancing understanding and perceptions both internally and externally. This initiative not only clarifies the professional identity of practitioners but also boosts public engagement and appreciation of Biodesign's potential and impact.
