Abstract
Tactility and temporality is second nature to most Indian cities. This construct is orchestrated by the quick deployment of "need-driven" infrastructure. These cities experience the growth of such informal and temporal structures on occasions of festivals and community events, like the Kumbh Mela. Kumbh Mela is a religious festival, for which an entire temporary city is created to host around 15 - 20 million people. The material system behind these structures is composed of plastic, polyester cladding and iron, steel or bamboo framework, which results in partial curated re-use, however the ultimate life cycle end to the material palette is usually in the landfill. Fiber-Tangled explores the possibilities and limitations of spraying, non-woven natural fibers and bio-based binder composite for rapid on-site construction of low-cost tensile membrane structures.
