Abstract
In an era characterised by the growing relevance of bio-based design solutions and the urgent need for transition to regenerative and more-than-human futures, a question arises: how can we nurture the growth of biodesigners? Here, a framework aimed at advancing biodesign practice and education is proposed, progressing from passive engagement with nature to active collaboration with living systems. This framework unfolds in three stages: designing with nature, for nature, and ultimately with living systems — reflecting a radical shift in the dynamics between designers and their environment. Equipped with principles of interconnectedness, regeneration and coexistence, the next generation of biodesigners is then positioned to drive the emergence of a bioeconomy and society serving the needs of both humanity and the planet. This framework underscores the transformative potential of cultivating biodesigners capable of reviving our connection with the broader web of life.
