Abstract

This review examines the effect of social media usage on teenagers' mental health, both positive and negative while exploring how digital detox may help teenagers improve their mental well-being.In positive effect. According to Seabrook et al (2016), Orben (2020), teenagers found that social media usage boosted their sociality and provided more academic resources. On the negative effect, considering that social media usage is now a daily routine, the excessive use of social media is believed to link with anxiety, depression and sleeping disorders (Twenge et al. 2018; Levenson et al. 2016).Cyberbullying has also been one of the main issues affecting teenagers daily as it worsens the mental health problems. According to a survey conducted by Columbia University Irving Medical Center (2020), more than 29 % of high school students surveyed admitted that they were targets of cyberbullying in the past year.Digital detox, which refers to a period of time that teenagers stay away from social media, is believed to have the potential benefits for teenagers' mental health including decreased symptom of depression and anxiety and better sleep precison (Hunt et al. 2018; Wilmer and Chein 2016).However, teenagers still need to be careful when applying digital detox since there are pressures coming from societies and their peers. Furthermore, school and community programs have succeeded in promoting healthy digital ridges and limits. Overall, teenagers should choose to use social media with balance in order to boost their mental health.
