Abstract
In many ways, GCBS Proceedings 1.0 can be thought of as a seed— carefully planted that we hoped would grow into a fruitful corpus of history—a preserved record of the many wonderful and insightful sessions that took place during GCBS 4.0. This second act represents the early branches in our growth and history. In this next chapter, you will !nd content on the myriad workshops and tracks hosted during GCBS 5.0—from How to Respond to COVID-19, Regional Developments, The Power of Community, Plenaries, and Learning & Education to Open Innovation, Diversity & Inclusion, Ancient Future Technology, Ecological Guardianship, BioArt & Design, the Bio Creation Station, Communicating Science, Global Collaborations, and Governance. This content is more than a mere recording of sessions and collection of abstracts. It is proof and testimony of the impact our community has in the world. If the previous proceedings were proposed as a center from which to branch out and expand, the edition now in your hands is the embodiment of such branching and expansion. In it you will find new milestones such as the inaugural Science Activist Award, and its first recipient. Every effort and contribution here exists only in relation to the context within which it was conceived and the background and voices of those who made it. To put it plainly, the whole is way more than the sum of its parts.
