Abstract
This report proposes a novel closed-loop framework, the "Generative Validation Paradigm," to address the significant challenge of certifying autonomous vehicle (AV) safety. Traditional methods, which rely on accumulated driving mileage, are inherently insufficient to prove an AV's competence against the "long tail" of rare, critical events. The proposed framework integrates multiple advanced technologies into a continuous, self-improving cycle. It begins with the collection of real-world data from Naturalistic Driving Studies (NDS) to establish a foundation in human driving behavior. This data informs a "Generative Engine," which leverages state-of-the-art models like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Diffusion Models to synthesize a continuous stream of novel, high-risk, and statistically plausible scenarios. These generated scenarios are then used to train and evaluate the AV in a simulated environment using Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms. The key to the framework is a feedback loop where the AV's performance data—specifically, its failures—is used to refine the generative engine, making it more effective at producing increasingly challenging, adversarial scenarios. This architectural approach not only scales the validation process but also mitigates the simulation-reality gap by constantly grounding the digital environment in real-world data. By systematically exploring and mitigating safety-critical events, this paradigm offers a pathway toward a certifiable standard of AV safety, moving beyond empirical proof to a more robust, auditable framework for regulatory approval and public trust.
