Abstract

This study examines the development of Nepali cinema and its contribution to the mediatization of Nepali society from the perspective of social responsibility. It explores how Nepali films influence language, culture, fashion, identity, social values, and audience perceptions while identifying major challenges affecting their development and social impact. The study employs an interpretive, qualitative-dominant research design integrating historical, documentary, narrative, and case-study methods with audience survey data. Primary data were collected from 120 respondents in Suryabinayak Municipality, Wards 6 and 8, while secondary data were obtained from books, scholarly literature, theses, policies, and publications related to Nepali cinema. Selected films from different periods were examined to identify changes in cinematic representation, technology, cultural expression, and social responsibility. The findings indicate that Nepali cinema has progressively adopted modern technology and expanded its influence through television, YouTube, and social media. However, inadequate investment, limited infrastructure, shortage of skilled human resources, stereotypical filmmaking, and competition from foreign cinema remain significant challenges. The study concludes that original, culturally grounded, and socially responsible filmmaking can strengthen mediatization, preserve national identity, promote social awareness, and contribute to positive social transformation.
